India’s coffee revolution

Coffe-Shop

India may be a tea-guzzling country, but India also happens to be the world’s sixth largest producer of coffee. Only that more than 70 per cent of this is exported. However, over the past five years, coffee consumption has gone up substantially.

This has created what marketers call a ‘coffee-culture’. Barista, Café Coffee Day and Costa are among some of the coffee chains that have ridden the interest in coffee and socialising to become national chains. Barista and Café Coffee Day own 400 outlets. There has also, for long, been speculation about Starbucks entering India.

So how did this all happen, how does a tea drinking country slowly beome a coffee drinking one. Well it is down to young Indians enjoying novelty, enjoying new ideas and new places but it is definitely not just coffee, it is a new experience.
